An open head injury is one in which something breaks the skull and enters the brain. Any type of head injury can be a very serious injury. Minor injuries can bleed a lot and major injuries sometimes don’t bleed at all. It is important that all head injuries be treated seriously and assessed by a doctor. Head injuries caused by blows to the head occur frequently in motor vehicle wrecks, in falls and in physical assaults. After a head injury, there is a possibility of a hematoma which is the collection of blood and can be very serious if it occurs in the brain; hemorrhage which is uncontrolled bleeding; concussion; swelling; fracture; or damage to brain cells. Anyone who has suffered a traumatic injury to their head needs to seek immediate medical attention. Even if the symptoms do not appear to be serious at the time of the wreck more serious symptoms may appear in the days or weeks following the wreck.
